Maine seperated from Massachusestts in 1820
The published Vital Records of massachusestts Towns up to 1850-are divided in birth/marriage/death and futher and if you can trace Maine/Mass ancestors prior to 1820 they would be listed by surname-although there are seperated sections for"Indians" and "Negroes" {Afro-Americans}
Books Google has a selection of these Vital records online-
Just put in search engine "Vital Records for the Town of .... Massachusetts prior to 1850"
