As I understand, it is the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (FIP) which determines who in Canada can claim the status of registered membership in a "nation". They seem to have the same function as the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) in the U nited States government. However, for genealogical purposes, it is good to know that several of the original tribal groups in the border area were in residence on both sides of the border.
