I did see Burrell, don't know why that happens - I have an ancestor that went from Joseph to George and back...I don't know why. The draft card can be found in ancestry.com, under the name 'william edward davis davis' - he had written dorris, but someone came along and decided it should be davis, then it morphed into davis davis. Their address is on that card, though, and you may find out something about him from there.

like I said, I think you're going to have track them backwards, step by step. They're always noted as White, though, so you're going to need to keep an open mind about what you find. As I said, try city directories, newspaper stories, etc, especially since you've got a good idea of where he was. There may be some clue as to his mother in there, somewhere. Another thing you might do is see if the names of any of William's children match up with any Painters in GA. I have actually had some luck with that.
