Here's what I've come up with Linda. Although I'm not of your direct branch, I've come across your family a few times and have confused them for my own:
John Harvey Alexander's parents were listed as W.H. (William Harvey, of course) and before that as Harvey Alexander, born in either TN or MS (both were listed in different census)in about 1813. his wife Lucinda was born in TN inout 1817. In 1850 and 1860 they are living in Harrisburg, Van Buren County, IA, where W.H. is a farmer. Their children listed as William S., b. ~1841; Thomas C., b. ~1845; John H., b. ~1846; Andrew J., b. ~1847; James H., b. ~1849; Hester A., b. ~1850; Franklin P., b. ~1852; George W., b. ~1856. All were born in Iowa. It is highly likely that your ancestor and several of his brothers were in the Civil War, of course. Also, Harvey would appear to be James Harvey? At any rate, James H. is living with his parents and Andrew, Hester, Franklin and Thomas at the family farm in Harrisburg in 1870. Iowa census show him in Harrisburg in 1885 and in 1915 he is in Van Buren, Van Buren County, Iowa. He listed himself as single, 66 years of age, and was residing at a county home, likely an ivalid. As for William Harvey Alexander and Lucinda, I have the following: William was born Sep 10, 1812 Hawkins, TN; d. Dec 7, 1878 IA; md. Lucinda Cavin at the home of John Cavin, Sep 17, 1843. Several sources have listed William's father as William. I have nothing else on Lucinda's family. Hope this helps.
