Brenda, I have found the following information that may be of help: a James E. Alexander is shown on the 1880 US Census as living on his father John W. Alexander's farm in Williamson County, TN. John W., the father, is a farmer, a widower, and was born in NC about 1829. Other children include: Edwin R., b. ~1856 (in TN, as are all of the children); Jessee (M), b. ~1857; James E., Nannie A., b ~1863; John W. Jr., b. ~1866; Thomas R., b. ~1869; Fannie B., b. ~1873. There appears to be several John W. Alexander's from NC; you might consider looking up data from that state as well as TN at an LDS Library. Also, check at findagrave.com from time to time. I couldn't find anyone from your family yet there, but you could get lucky with a future update. Good luck.
