Identity of John H. Alexander, of Jackson Co., Iowa, b.1823-24 in Tennessee

I am looking to verify the identity of John H. (possibly Henry) Alexander, born 1823-1824 in Tennessee. In Oct. 1848, he married Esther Dutton in Jackson Co., Iowa. She died in childbed in May 1850. John was listed in the 1849 and 1850 censuses for that county but was gone by 1856. I haven’t been able to track him after 1850. He may have been associated with the early Mormon Church since the Dutton’s certainly were.
I see John Houston Alexander in the 1860 Brown Co., Illinois census with similar birth information. Is it possible that they were the same person? Can anyone provide information that they weren’t the same person? Thank you!
