Norfolk, VA Beach, and poss NC Alexanders

Seeking information or leads on the family of my great-grandfather, WALTER JAMES ALEXANDER, Sr. (b. 1889 in Norfolk, VA, d. 1937 in Philadelphia, PA after falling off the roof of a church he was repairing and landing on a wrought iron fence). Walter went to a Baptist Seminary School (not sure where), and married my Great-grandmother, JOSEPHINE MARGARET BIROT (b. 1893 in Brooklyn, NY, d. 1940 in PA) on October 14, 1911, at Philadelphia, PA.

I have scads of info about his descendants (nine children, all born in Philadelphia, PA, and their families), but hit a brick wall when I try to go back to VA. I know from paperwork my grandfather left behind that his siblings were: LOUISE, SADIE (d. 1935 in Norfolk), WADIE (d. in Los Angeles, CA, date unknown), and OLIVER (d. 1960 in Norfolk, VA). He also had a half-brother named CHARLES MEARS.

I have copies of pages from his family Bible that indicate other relatives of WALTER JAMES ALEXANDER, Sr. to be:
- WILLIS TOXEY - grandfather, d. 1914 aged 65 years
- WALTER BRITT - nephew, d. 1914 aged 2 years
- WILLIAM THOMAS BRITT - brother-in-law, d. 1915 age 36
- Capt. WALTER R. ALEXANDER - uncle, d. 1932 age 73
- Capt. HENRY L. ALEXANDER - uncle d. 1933 age 84
- ROBERT HITCHOCK - nephew, d. 1931 age 7
(possibly a misspelling, intended to be HITCHCOCK?)
- SADIE BLANCHE ALEXANDER COPELAND - sister, d. 1935 age 49

The next entry in the Bible is Walter, Sr.'s own death, and afterward there are no further entries pertaining to any but the family in Philadelphia.

I am told that there is supposedly a cemetery in the VA Beach area with a lot of the family in it. I am told that when Walter, Sr. met his rather horrific and untimely demise the family in VA pleaded with Josephine to send him back home to VA to be buried, but since all of his (many) children were in Philadelphia, their please went unheeded, and familial ties were broken as a result.

I have some paperwork from a legal battle in the early 1970s over the distribution of assets from the sale of a family home located at 163 PINEWOOD ROAD that indicate several other surnames that came into the picture at some point, likely after Walter, Sr.'s departure for Philadelphia. These include, among others, FORBES (mostly listed with addresses in CA), WALKER (listed with addresses in VA, IL, CA, and NC), and MOSER (with addresses in VA).

Family lore (as passed down to me at least) says that the Alexander family owned a plantation in what is now Virginia Beach. It is also said that they came from further south before that, though, possibly from right across the border in NC.

Anyway, if any of this rings a bell with anybody, please let me know!
