Not related.......just a lookup

Is this your Dad?
Social Security Death Index
Name:        William L. Swails
SSN:
Last Residence:        94558 Napa, Napa Co, California, United States of America
Born:        28 May 1913
Died:        16 Oct 1998
State (Year) SSN issued:        Indiana (Before 1951)

I deleted the ss number here for privacy but you can order a copy of his 'original' Social Security Application. ..one of the few documents filled out (1940s) by him. Death records are filled out by others and often contain errors or omissions. One of the questions on the form is fathers full name & mothers full maiden name. I have had great results with these applications.

Go to:
http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi

Imput: Swails.......William......L (nothing else)

He is the only one to come up. Scroll to the far right and click on the 'SS-5 Letter' and a nice form letter will print out with all the required info on it. Fill in your info, enclose the check, and mail it off. Good luck.

Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941

Ernest & Mary Swails are living next door to her parents (Simon & Lydia Allen) on the 1910 IN, Morgan County census. Ernest & Mary Swails have a son Forest who is under a year old. Might be William's parents? Worth checking out.

1920 IN, Morgan Co, Clay twp census
Forest Swails 10 & Earl Swails 8...listed as 'lodgers' are living in the household of Noah Allen 37 & wife Cora 37 and their two young sons. All born in Indiana.

**Although nothing was on this index for your William, it still may be there. Write to Morgan County and check for any birth record with your Dad's date. Also check for a death record for a Mary Swails between Jun 1917 & mid 1920. Also check Marion County, IN for these records; Ernest was there working for awhile during this timeframe.

**Here is where it gets interesting....the same Ernest Swails of the above 1910 census...
WW1 Draft Registratiion filled out 05 Jun 1917
in Clay twp, Morgan Co, Indiana
Earnest Swails bn 15 Oct 1886 states he is married and has 4 children.

***Then Ernest Swails (of the same dob)marries again by
Oct 1920
Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941
Name:        Ernest Swails
Spouse Name:        Eva A Cummings
Marriage Date:        2 Oct 1920
Marriage County:        Marion
Birth Date:        15 Oct 1886
Age:        34

Source Title 3:        Original Record Located: County Clerk's Office Ind

**On his WW11 Draft Registration of 1942 he states his full given name is Ernest Chancy Swails bn       15 Oct 1886 in Lebanon, IN and lists a Mary Grissel of Lebanon, IN as his closest relative.
This is probably his sister Mary Swails that md Jesse M. Grisel.

***Back to the 4 children he claimed on the 1917 WW1 Draft Registration....On the 1930 IN, census Earnest Swails with his 2nd wife Eva....have a Ruth Swails 14, dau, living in household....cant be dau of Eva...went looking for Ruth Swails on the 1920 IN census and found her.
1920 IN, Boone Co, Lebanon census is Ruth J. Swails 4yrs 1 month, bn IN, neice. Living in h/h of Russell & Dorothy Swails. So she was born abt 1915/1916. From the 1900 IN census Russell & Earnest Swails were brothers.
Looks like we 'might' have found the 4 kids of
Ernest Chancy Swails and Mary Allen;
Forest.. Born:        23 Sep 1909, died:1 Jun 1997 IN
Earl ...Born: 22 Mar 1911, Died: Mar 1972 (maybe IN?)
William.... see above
Ruth ....Born abt 195/1916

Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941
Name:        Simon Allen
Spouse Name:        Lydia Davidson
Marriage Date:        18 Jul 1883
Marriage County:        Morgan
Source Title 1:        Morgan County, Indiana
Source Title 2:        Index to Marriage Record 1850 to 1920 Inclusive Vo
Source Title 3:        W. P. A. Original Record Located County Clerks Off
Book:        C-2
OS Page:        450
On the 1900 IN census Simon & Lydia state married 18yrs....so this Jul 1883 is a good possible match. Might want to keep this in your files incase it ends up being the right ones.

**All of this is just what I was able to track from the records I found. You will need to order the documents, look for other records, OBITS, inorder to prove that this is infact your Swails family group. But atleast you have somewhere to start.

Good luck
Marsha
