Hello, I am researching the service record of my 5h great uncle. His name was Christian Hoffman, born 1752-1845. There are many differences in what his pension states and what researchers say. There are also things that match. He appeared to have enlisted in the Twelfth Pa for two and a half years. Col Cook commanding, under Capt. Withington. (This is listed in his pension, and notes) The pension claims enlistment was August 1775. I don't know why Christian said this, as the twelfth didn't exist then. Research notes say he enlisted November 5, 1776. (This is more Likely, becasue recruiting commenced between Sep-Dec '76, in Berks, Pa, where he lived.) Next, researchers, such as the SAR, claims he saw militia duty, but there is no reference to this in the pension... The pension states he was transferred to the Third under Col. Craig, Capt Henderson, after his service in the twelfth. Again, in the research notes from 1988, there is no mention of the Third Pa. - The pension was granted in 1818, so I think he could remember the facts quite well. Personally, I trust what he said. In a Anniversary Book, for Fetterhoffs Church, his place of burial, it lists him as being in the Continental Army, not militia. Could someone please clear all of this up? Why did he say enlisted 1775... why does he and the researchers say differnt things? Thanks, Stefan Fetterhoff Notify Administrator about this message?
