Someone posted the following on the Royall forum, and I thought it might be relevant. It states that there was a Henry Royall and a John Archer that were step-brothers. The surname Curle is also of some interest. Within Elizabeth City Co., VA, Charles Batt/Batts appears in records with Thomas Curle, cordwainer; Thomas Batts with Pascho Curle; and Joshua Curle is one of the executors of the will of Francis Batts D. circa 1717 (the will itself is not extant).
"I am trying to identify the Henry Royall who patented 245 acres of land in Warwick County 29 Oct 1696 (Patent Book 9, p. 102), and 586 acres on the Elizabeth City County side of the Warwick line 28 Oct 1697 (Patent Book 9, p. 121). Is he the brother or nephew of Joseph Royall, the immigrant, or is he the son? Henry Royall was Sheriff of Elizabeth City County by 1692, and is also credited with having taken the 1704 Quit Rent roll. Royall's land was still in his name as late as 10 May 1729 when Miles Cary patented 200 acs of lapsed land in Elizabeth City County adjoining land of the heirs of Mr. Thomas Curle, merchant; Mr. Henry Royall; land of the heirs of John Archer; Mr. Robert Armistead's; & land of the heirs of Thomas Curle, cordwaner (Patent Book, 13, p. 359). We know that a Henry Royall and a John Archer were half-brothers (sons of Katherine Banks), however it is unclear whether this entry in the land records of Elizabeth City County refers to them or to different Royalls and Archers. I have found nothing further on Henry Royall of Warwick-Elizabeth City County after the 1729 Miles Cary entry. Would like to compare notes and exchange information with other Royall researchers about this particular Henry Royall...................Correction from my original posting re the two half brothers, Henry Royall and John Archer. They were the sons of Mary _? who had married Joseph Royall and George Archer, not sons of Katherine Banks. Sorry for the confusion. I would still enjoy hearing from any Royall or Archer researcher who knows anything about Captain Henry Royall and his neighbor John Archer, both of whom lived along the Elizabeth City-Warwick line during the 1690s. Henry was Sheriff and Captain of the Horse for Elizabeth City, and apparently lived beyond 1704, perhaps until ca 1729/30. John Archer had died prior to late 1813 based on 1813 and later adjacent patentees who referred to his land as "heirs of John Archer, dec'd.""
