Have book, THE LEGACY OF JOHN McQUATTY ARCHER, compiled by Coleman J. Archer 1987, published by Arlington Century Printing, Inc., Arlington, Texas 76013. for whatever it's worth, page 18: 4th paragraph from top of page: From Georgia we follow the Archers to Lowndes County, Alabama. Lowndes County is located in the center of the state just southeast of Montgomery. It is here that a John M. Archer writes a will in 1833 and shortly thereafter dies. The two witnesses to the will were Thomas and William Archer. Two of these three Archers can be fairly certainly identified. They are John and Thomas - the two sons of Alexander from England. We would be delighted to know that the third was Thomas' son and our William Eldridge. We do not know this. Next paragraph (last on page): A few things of interest about this John who wrote his will and then died. He was most certainly fairly young since he had two young children and a pregnant wife. The children were John and Silas. After John's death, his widow Elizabeth (nee Mathews) bore another son named Henry. Not long after his father John died, his son Silas died. Elizabeth married again to a man named Andrew T. Hays. After a while he became guardian of the little boys, Henry and John, and their inheritance. He turned out to a no-good and began to squander their money. The courts took him to test very severely and Elizabeth's father, Charles Mathews, was put in charge of the boys' affairs. In an outline form, Johnathan Archer (a second Johnathan, c. 1810-1833) married Elizabeth Mathews (offspring John, b. c 1830; Silas b. c 1832 - d c 1835; and Henry b. 1833). The first page of this book has a picture of JOHN McQUATTY ARCHER, born 1836 died 1917. John M. Archer married Mary Penelope Mullins in July of 1855. Robertson County, Texas. My interest in Archers is that my husband's mother, Lillie Archer Chamlee (1905-1981) was (obviously) an Archer. Many settled in Hancock County, GA, which was formed about 1794. The names Lodowick and Frederick figure prominently though we have not proven the lines except to William who married Elizabeth Jackson. Notify Administrator about this message?
