I do not have any information on the apprenticeship or orphan situation of Joab Armfield. but this has to be the same person. on the 1850 and 1860 federal census schedules he is listed as a wagonmaker.his brother-in-law gilbert edwards(matilda(armfield)edwards husband)was listed as a saddler,as were some of his sons.i am gathering more information on these indiana armfields (and have more than what i have posted here)joab and gilbert edwards were trustees for the manilla methodist church from at least 1839 to 1856 and held (in part) the deed to the church property in their names.`i calculate that these 4 families came to rush county from guilford county, north carolina between 1834 and 1836. i show matilda(armfield)edwards died 4 june 1852- aged 51 yrs 9mos 29days, eleanor(armfield) Daugherty/Doherty died 11 april 1852- aged 46 years 3mos 14days, virtueous(armfield) edwards died 19 nov 1878 aged 67yrs 10mos 24days. all are buried in the manilla cemetery about a half mile north of manilla, walker twsp.,rush county, indiana.death dates came from a local compilation of cemetery records which i found in the local history room of the rushville public library.i have seen some of the gravestones(in 2003) they were still readable.i think one of the sisters /and spouse were not in the compilation and the dates i post here came off gravestones for them in that cemetery. i have not yet been able to establish a deathdate for joab or where he was when he died. his wife susannah(murphey)armfield died 24 dec 1866 according to the gravestone in the fairview cemetery, stockwell, tippecanoe county, indiana. susannah's inscription is on the same stone as her daughter louisa(armfield) goldsberry.i calculate joab's birthdate to be 1811/1812 by repeated age listings on federal censuses. someone on a net website shows a birthdate of 7 may 1812 and a deathdate of 13 nov 1872 but i do not know where these dates came from.
