Hi Clare,
I remember you from a few years ago as we had been in touch about the Auchmutey/Auchmoody origins and Dr. James Johnston Auchmuty of Australia.
As I recall we were both a bit hesitant about Dr. Auchmuty's work as he didn't seem to have any or few citations for his statements about James's (of New Paltz, NY) parentage. But it is a great starting point and sounds very interesting if it is true. I think everything appeared accurate down to John Auchmuty who married Isabel Wemyss. After that, it looked rather sketchy with a son of this couple named John who married Elizabeth Murray, and then another son John and an unnamed wife who had James Auchmuty who married Jeanne Coughlan, who then had James who settled in New Paltz? There might even be a generation missing if the New Paltz James wasn't born until about 1707.
