Baacke, Andrew (entered U.S. via NYC)

I'd like to hear from possible relatives.

Andrew Baacke, my ancestor, arrived in NYC in 1863. The family settled in Brooklyn, but Andrew joined the army soon after their arrival. They came from around Hanou, Germany. On his enlistment papers in the U.S. Army Andrew listed his occupation as "segarmaker" (sic). He had one or more brothers.

Andrew signed up with Company "H" of the 39th NY Infantry Regiment and served with that unit in Virginia. After the war he was dispatched to the U.S. Mexico border which, up to then, was totally uninhabited. There, he married a Mexican woman, and settled in Starr County, Texazs, where he died around 1917. He fathered one child, my grandmother.

I'd like to hear from other family members and/or from people who know something about the role of the 39th NY Regiment in the civil War.

Thanx!
