I am happy and surprised to learn that the Backman family is so "old" in that area. There was a tradition in my family (probably wrong, I see now) that my family name was originally Ackman, but there seems to be less reason to believe that now.

Does anyone know of good online maps of that part of Finland that show parishes and detail? The detailed topography maps that I have (in storage somewhere) from the early 20th century often have two names for every town, which is good to know (Finnish and Swedish?). Someday I will scan what I have, as these maps are rather hard to come by.

Where might I find a copy of this Anders Backman book you speak of, was it privately printed and very rare? And what is Terjarv, a town? parish? district? My gt-gndf was John Eric or Johan Erick Backman born in Finby, Finland in 1849 and married Ester Forsberg in 1910 in Narpes, Finland.

Thanks, Steve Norman
