William Hutchinson* BAILEY b: 30 Apr 1823 in Hamilton Co.,Ohio _____________________________ Trying to establish the beginnings of Daniel Bailey's life was most difficult and remains unknown. Even though he had come to Ohio from the East, I was never able to find documentation of his origin. According to his tombstone he should have been born on July 29th 1782. The only Daniel Bailey's documented in the Census of this time period that corresponds close to this birth year either died and/or settled elsewhere. There were Vermont, Connecticut, and Massachusetts' Bailey families. The Connecticut Bailey family came the closest to being the possible family of origin. Why the Connecticut family? Because there was a Daniel born* around this time period that appeared to migrate to Cape May New Jersey. Cape May figured prominently in the history of notables in Hamilton County, including the birthplace of Phebe Richardson, Daniel's wife. It seems that there were many individuals and families that migrated from this port city to Ohio, perhaps connected to Judge Symmes, who also originated from this area. *{His birth, though, was well documented and it does not correspond to the calculated birth on the tombstone at the Congress Green Cemetery at North Bend. This same Daniel could not himself be traced- which is another indication that he is "one and the same."} The Daniel Bailey of interest married a Lucinda Chapman in Cape May. His brother, Gideon Bailey, married her sister. The Cape May Chapman's had previously lived in Connecticut near the Bailey's. Interestingly, Gideon Baily and the Cape May Chapman's also went West to Ohio and settled in the Marietta area. There was no further documentation of Daniel and Lucinda. I surmised that she probably died and Daniel went West (possibly first participating with the War of 1812). Had he met Phebe Richardson in Cape May, or in Ohio when he was socializing with other Cape May families? Here is the family of origin for the Connecticut Daniel Bailey: Gideon Bailey , Jr. Birth: 17 Nov 1751 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT Death: 10 May 1806 Father: Gideon Bailey, Sr. b. 4 Aug 1725 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT Mother: Sarah Senter, Immigrant b.
