I had a breakthrough, and I want to offer it up for review by this group and folks familiar with Poland and Baileywick Maine genealogy: Stephen Grande was adopted by his stepfather.
The Breakthrough (per David James) was:
Edward Bailey, 20, listed in the 1860 USC of Poland is the same person as Edmund A. Bailey, s/o Sylvanus and Mehitabel (Daicey) Bailey and grandson of Edmund and Sally (Lane) Bailey. As you can see from the accompanying report, he is found in the 1870 USC of Poland, age 30, with his wife, Mary J. Colomy of Parsonsfield, together with their three children, including the youngest, Freeman E. Bailey. Mary Colomy died the same year, according to "Inscriptions from Gravestones at Poland, Maine" (NEHGR 89:343). Mary Colomy's mother was Mary Cobb, and her pedigree is filled with links to many old New England families, including Mayflower passengers John and Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland.
