Do you have the New York and/or Kansas State census records on John Leroy Bailey? I can't remember which State census records survived in New York but it would be worth your efforts to look into this. City directories may offer you a clue, as well. Your research is very thorough, so you've probably already tried this, but if not ...

I've found census records for two of my Kansas lines in these year: 1857, 1859, 1865, 1875, 1885, 1895, 1905, & 1915. These records have been very helpful to me because they have filled in gaps related to birth of children and/or deaths. And you may want to consider your ancestors making the jump back and forth from Kansas to Missouri.

For the longest time I tried to locate a death record/obit on my g-grandmother, Catharine (Martin) Burke in KS, and for the life of me couldn't find one---even though I knew when she died and where she was buried. Well, she died in MO (electric street car accident) while visiting family and walking to Mass. Her body was removed to KS for burial with her husband, Michael J. Burke. I have two newspaper obits (MO & KS) and one medical record on this from MO.

So, I'm learning that anything is possible.
