You should be able to get the records of the English and Welsh events from 1837online-

For the earlier Scottish events, go to Scotland's People-

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

You should be able to see the scanned version of James Baillie's birth on-line at SP; and it will have several details normally which will make going further back, relatively easy.

You may also find earler information on familysearch; but any should be cross-checked to the appropriate one of the other two sites.
