I am looking for the parents of Charles James Baines. He was born in England and died in South Africa. He went to South Africa as part of the English army during the Zulu war, and then stayed on afterwards. He married Fernande Collet in Kimberly South Africa. In family tradition he became a prospector. Also according to family tradition his family back in England was apparantly well off and it was said that the family rose to prominence in the 19th century. One of his relatives became mayor of a Yorkshire town and another served in Parliament. I have found a family like that but have not been able to make a connection. Here is the Baines family tree that I have so far: Charles James Baines b. (England) d. 1905 (South Africa) m. (April 22 1896, Kimberly, South Africa) Marie Fernande Collet b. 1887 (Aix en Provence, France) d. 1949 (Johannesburg, South Africa) Children (four): 1. Gladys Dorethea/Dorothy Baines b. 1898 d. 1984 m. Johann Gottfried Hoch 2. Estelle ("Stella"- Frances Stella Ruby, "Aunty Bunny") Baines m. div. Robert Max Hinings m. Arnold Stilling 3. Thomas Vivian Baines b. 1904 m. Lorna de Fontein children: Vivian, Lorna, Edward, Catherine 4. Dudley b. 1909? d. 1920 - died at 11 years old? Notify Administrator about this message?
