Lisa,

I am also seeking the parents of Thomas Bane. I descend from his oldest son, James. Thomas (b. abt 1780) was married to Barbara Criner in Giles county, VA. Barbara's parents were Andrew Criner and Barbara Anna Oberholzer. Andrew and Anna married on Jan 7, 1792. Andrew was born around 1772 and died abt 1834 in Giles county, residence was very close to Newport Virginia. Barbara Anna was born around 1768 in Lancaster Co., PA to Samuel and Maria Eva (Hauswirth) Oberholzer. Anna died sometime before her husband in Giles county. Samuel Oberholzer was born in Sinsheim, Germany in 1729 and emigrated with his father, Jacob to Pennsylvania. After his marriage Samuel and Maria Eva moved to the Shenandoah Valley where Samuel died around 1783.

James Bane was the first to leave Virginia for Ohio around 1830-35 and his Parents and siblings soon followed. I suspect that Thomas and Barbara are buried in the Bane Cemetery in Harrison Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio, but no stones are there.

Following is a link that may be of interest to you. It is the medical history of Nancy Donnally Bane, wife of your Henry. It is very well done and respectful of Nancy and her problems.

One interesting item has come out of DNA testing. The descendants of James Bane of Gallia do not match the DNA samples of the other Bane family in Giles County VA. Another James Bane is the head of that family and they are pretty well documented. We did however, have a match to a descendant of Walter Bayne of Maryland. That does not mean we descend directly from Walter, the connection could be farther back.

Here are the scant records I have found on Thomas:
1810: Census Giles Co. VA:
William Been 1 male under 10, 1 male 26-45, 3 females under 10, 1 female 16-26
Jane Been 2 males 16-26, 1 female 26-45, 1 female over 45 (good candidate for Thomas' Mother)

1820 Census of Giles Co., Virginia, page 112:
Thomas Bane has 2 males under 10 (James & Henry); 2 males 26-45 (Thomas & Unknown); 1 female 16-26 (Barbary) 1 female 26-45 (Unknown); no one is over 45, we know Thomas is 35 so the extra male cannot be his father. The extra male could be Andrew Criner.

1830 Census Montgomery Co. VA, Christiansburg:
Thomas Bane 2 males under 5 (Peter? and Unknown), 1 male 5-10 (Henry), 1 male 10-15 (James), 1 males 40-50 (Thomas), 1 female under 5 (Elizabeth), 1 female 5-10 (Nancy), 1 female 10-15 (Unknown), 1 female 30-40 (Barbary), 1 female 40-50 (Barbara's sister?)

Andrew Criner and wife, Anna, to Thomas Bane. 27 Mar 1815. Both of Giles county. $120. Land on the Greenbrier branch of Sinking Creek (36 acres). Bounded by Gap Mountain and David Price's land. Attested by Moses Adkins.

Thomas Bane and wife, Barbary, and Nancy Criner of Montgomery county to John Criner of Giles county. 13 Mar 1835. 50 acres in Giles county. Sold as heirs at law of the late Andrew Criner deceased. Originally deeded to Criner 29 Oct 1813. Thomas signed with his mark and Barbary signed with an X.
