Hi

I am also interested in the Beadles from S/SE London and noticed your message. Unfortunately, my Beadles were from a little earlier on in the 19th century. However, I thought I’d pass on the following to you:

John Beadle and his family show up on the 1901 census as follows:

John Beadle head born abt 1871 Newington, Surrey greengrocer

Harriett Beadle wife born abt 1878 Clapham Surrey

Fred Beadle son born abt 1898 aged two years Clapham Surrey
(given the parents marriage date this should probably read 1899)

John Beadle son born abt 1900 (aged 3 months) Clapham Surrey (the census in 1901 was taken on 31 March 1901)

Charlotte Sayers sister in law born abt 1881 Clapham Surrey Ironer and washerwoman

They are all living at 9 Crescent Rd in Clapham, Surrey. There are other members of the Sayer family living in nearby houses, perhaps they are related to John’s wife.

John and Harriett were married in the March 1899 qtr in the St Saviour, Southwark District. This last bit of info is taken from the freebmd website, which has much of the GRO index on it. It is possible to order certs from the records office in London. The site is freebmd.org.uk

If you ever get further back and come across a James Beadle born 1828 in Stockton/Brixton or his wife Harriet French (married 1854 in Greenwich) or his parents James and Frances Beadle do let me know. They lived in the Lambeth/Stockton/Brixton area but I really know very little about them. James and Harriet left for NZ in 1858 and the only family members that I know about after that date were his mother Frances and a sister by the same name. The mother died before the 1881 census and the sister came to NZ in 1878. James also had a sister Emma born in 1826 and another Ann born in 1837 just before the compulsory registration, which is a bit of a pity. Perhaps James had other siblings and I would love to find some lines that remained in London but to date I have had no luck. There are a large number of Beadles in various parts of S/SE London plus many in Wimbledon. Newington as John’s place of birth is interesting as I am sure there was one family in the earlier 19th century who moved from Lambeth to that area. Can’t quite find my notes at the moment!

Anyway I hope this is of use.

Regards, Kathryn
