Beardsells of Holme, Austonley parish, West Riding of Yorkshire

Prior to the mid C19th Holme was in the Holmfirth chapelry of Almondbury parish. Record keeping for baptisms was complicated by the need to pass the information from the chapel to the parish and to collate this and information from other chapels with baptisms in the parish church itself. There are gaps where no records were kept and others where the PRs are in poor condition some gaps are covered by BTs. Independent copies of the Holmfirth register only survive from the mid-C18th.

Data are from a combination of IGI, the Yorks. Arch. Soc. volumes of transcription of the PRs and the Huddersfield & District Family History Society indexes.

There are considerable variations in spelling of the name. Mostly, however, the first element can be Berd, Beerd or Beard and the second sel, sell, sil, sill or zell. I tend to normalise them all to Beardsell. Christian names are Latinised in the registers; I've used the English version here. Dates are given new style, i.e. the year is taken to start on 01 Jan, as far as I can determine.

There were Beardsells recorded in the parish as early as the second half of the C16th but we're not told where they lived. When locations start to be recorded later in the C17th they're almost all in Holme so it seems likely that the earlier records mostly if not entirely refer to Holme. I've disregarded families clearly identified as not from Holme.

There are two marriages of Beardsell men in the 1650s, Thomas to Mary Armytage on 21 Oct 1655 and John to Anne Earnshaw on 14 Feb 1658. I have no children attributed to this marriage. There is a Jonas Beardsell whose baptism is unrecorded but I think he was one of Thomas's children. I will concentrate on Thomas's family therefore.

The baptisms of the following children are listed with Thomas Beardsell as father:

James 27 Aug 1662
Joshua 27 Aug 1662
Arthur 14 May 1665
Mary 15 Oct 1673

James and Joshua are explicitly stated to be twins.

In the next generation there are the following families:

Jonas and Elizabeth Woodhead married 17 May 1683
Martha 28 Mar 1687
James 07 Apr 1688
Jonas 12 Jan 1691
John 13 Aug 1699

In the Yorks. Arch. Soc. transcript Jonas is given in the Latin as the son of Janae, i.e. Jane but IGI has Jonas. There is no mention of illegitimacy nor any other reference to a Jane Beardsell so I believe the correct reading is Jonae, i.e. the son for Jonas.

Jonas's home in 1691 is given as Meal Hill which is a farm in Holme. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=410625&Y=406220&A=Y&Z=115

Joshua's marriage is not given and only one child is listed
Joshua Apr 1692

Joshua's home in 1692 is also given as Meal Hill. This seems to indicate that Meal Hill was the family home to both of them and that they had a recent common ancestor which is why I think that Jonas was likely to have been an unrecorded son of Thomas, probably born somewhere in the gap of almost 7 years between the marriage and the baptism of the twins.

Arthur and Grace Roberts 5 Jun 1693
Martha 27 Nov 1694

There was clearly at least one other unrecorded child in this period.

Mary married John Cardingley of Marsden on 4 Feb 1705 with no children traceable from the marriage. It's possible that she was not from Holme.

George married Sarah Haighe on 31 Jan 1706. This certainly was a Holme family as there are children baptised with George as father in the early C18th.

Sarah married Daniel Robuck on 26 Aug 1708. There's no indication that the children of this marriage were baptised in the chapelry so it's possible that she was not from Holme.

It appears from this that the Beardsells of Holme in the C18th and onwards were the descendants of Thomas.

It's not possible to connect Thomas with earlier generations with any certainty. His contemporary John was bapt 09 Aug 1635 the son of Henry. Henry married Anne Littlewood on 4 Nov 1633. It's possible that another child could have been born in this gap, especially if it were conceived before the marriage, but it seems unlikely. It also seems unlikely that Thomas would have been a younger brother of John.

A more likely parentage is an earlier Thomas Beardsell who married Diana Croslay on 23 Nov 1626 and whose known children were:

George 11 Mar 1627
Sarah 23 Mar 1629

Neither this older Thomas nor Henry can be connected to earlier Beardsells. In the absence of evidence other than parish records it seems likely that we should regard the younger Thomas as the earliest Beardsell who can be regarded as a known ancestor of the later Beardsells of Holme.
