Joseph Benge, son of Wurteh Watts and John "Trader" Benge, born 1761 in Botetourt, now Montgomery Co., VA died after 1842 in Harlan, KY married Elizabeth Rollins Oct. 2, 1786 in Montgomery Co., VA

Joseph later changed the spelling of his last name on a census to "Benjey" and when he had children gave them Benjey instead of Benge. He is on the Dawes Rolls as Joseph Benge with a roll number as "Cherokee" but was later on a census, after changing his name, as "white". I have more information on why he did that if you like. Let me know if you want that too.

their son:

William Benjey born Sept. 14, 1800 in Lee Co., VA died Feb. 11, 1883 in Rockhold, Whitley Co., KY married Mary Margaret Mark July 21, 1825 in Harlan Co., KY

their son:

Samuel Lusk Benjey born Oct. 26, 1832 in Woodbine, Whitley Co., KY died May 23, 1903 in Somerset, Pulaski Co., KY married Elizabeth Dowis Dec. 6, 1859 in Laurel Co., KY

their son:

Robert Parks Benjey born Feb. 20, 1860 in Lynn Camp, Knox Co., KY died Sept. 2, 1919 in Gatliff, Whitley Co., KY married Sarah Frances Burnett April 18, 1878 in Barbourville, Knox Co., KY

their son:

Samuel Everett Benjey born April 12, 1885 in Woodbine, Whitley Co., KY died May 18, 1962 Eubank, Pulaski Co., KY married Vernal "Zanna" Chesnut

their daughter:

Pauline Marie Benjey (still living!) married Charles Henry Pope. These are my grandparents.

I hope this helps. I also have info on the wives of these Benge men and how they connect to the Pope family as well. Let me know if you need anything else.
