Hi Chris & All,
I have a William Bettis who married into my mothers family. He married my mothers, grandfathers sister Mary Johnson. They are listed in the 1870 Kent County (Sparta Twp)Michigan Census which is online. William(age 23) is listed as being born in Canada and Mary A.(age 22) is listed as being born in England. There is also a farm laborer and domestic help listed with them and it lists the fact that Wm. & Mary were married in the month of March in that calander year (1870 Census)
Next door is probably his parents: Joseph & Lydia Bettis they were both born in Canada. His age is 62 and hers is 61 yrs. There is a daughter named Ellen listed as born in Michigan age 14.
Now you ask how did I know thaqt Mary A. Johnson married William Bettis. Well Mary's brother John E. Johnson was a prominent man in the community of Casnovia Michigan (Kent & Muskegon Counties split the town) and he was able to have a biographical record published. The name of the book is the "Portrait & Biographical Record of Muskegon and Ottawa Counties MICHIGAN" Chicago, Biographical Publishing Co. 1893.
Hope this helps.
