We are looking for information pertaining to James Bishop (1806-1877) of McLean Co. lL, his wife Margaret Canady, their children, grandchildren, and other descendents, etc.
James Bishop was born 3 Apr. 1806 in Fauquier Co. VA, the son of John Bishop III and Nancy Welch. He died 24 May 1877 in McLean Co. IL.
According to E. Duis in "The good old times in McLean County, Illinois:"
“The Bishop’s, from whom he was descended, came to the American colonies from England with William Penn. They were members of the Society of Friends. In the fall of 1809 the Bishop family moved [from Fauquier Co. VA] to that part of Ohio which is now called Clark County.”
“James Bishop came west in May, 1831, the spring after the deep snow. He came first to Lafayette, Indiana, then went to Fort Clark (now Peoria) and to Pekin, then down to the Mississippi bottom, where he bought cattle, and finally returned to Ohio. He came back every year until 1837, when he was married, and that, of course, settled him.”
According to Dr. Samuel Bishop in his book, "Bishop and Lake Families," published in 1898, James Bishop “was a man of great energy and determination. In the early thirties [1830’s], while yet a young man, he became distinguished as a cattle drover. For the most part, he purchased his herds in Illinois, and drove them through the states over the mountains to some Eastern market. He had marvelous skill and tact in the management of cattle. When he tired of a drover’s life, he bought a large tract of land a few miles northeast of Leroy IL. Here he settled down as a farmer.”
James Bishop married Margaret Canady (or Cannaday) on 9 Mar 1837 in McLean Co. IL. She was born circa 1809 and died after 1880. To this union were born five children:
1. Caroline Bishop was born 26 Jun. 1838 in Randolph McLean Co. IL. She died 25 Oct. 1915. She married Thomas W. Campbell on 12 Feb. 1863 in McLean Co. IL. He was born 4 Jun. 1830 in KY the son of Archibald Campbell and Elizabeth Shields. He died 10 Jan. 1892.
a. Sarah Jane Campbell was born 20 Nov. 1865 near Holder, IL. She married Moses Dunlap 27 Mar. 1895 in LeRoy, McLean Co. IL. She died 12 Dec. 1919 in LeRoy, McLean Co. IL.
b. Emily Lucy Campbell was born on 29 May 1870 near Holder, IL. She married Clarence (Claude) Travace Neal 14 Sep. 1892 in Holder, IL. She died on 17 Jan. 1936 in Chicago, IL.
2. John Allen Bishop was born 3 May 1840 in Randolph McLean Co. IL. He lived about a half mile west of his father. He died in 1896. He married Mary E. Wiley on 14 Feb. 1871 in Randolph, McLean Co. IL. She was born Mar. 1843 in IL.
a. James F. Bishop was born Nov. 1871 in McLean Co. IL. He died 9 Nov. 1948 in Cook Co. IL. He was an attorney in Chicago. Did he ever marry or have any children?
3. Emily (Emma) Bishop was born 30 Aug. 1843 in Randolph McLean Co. IL. Did she marry William Evans on 6 Feb. 1862 in McLean Co. IL? Did they have any children?
4. Rachel Bishop was born on 23 May 1846 in Randolph McLean Co. IL. She married Nathaniel Henderson Beckham Jr. (b. 11 May 1836 in Warren Co, KY; d. 1923; buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, McLean Co. IL) on 5 Jan 1868 in McLean Co, IL. They lived four miles southeast of her father’s place. She died 14 Mar. 1930 in Leroy, McLean Co. IL.

c. Eliza J. Beckham, born circa 1876 in IL.

5. James Quitman Bishop was born 24 Nov. 1848 in LeRoy McLean Co. IL. This was the day when General Scott took the city of Mexico and appointed General Quitman the Governor. He married Martha J. Powell on 16 Feb. 1873. She died in childbirth in Nov. 1873. The child died also. James Q. Bishop married (2nd) Margaret V. Powell on 11 Mar. 1875 in Randolph McLean Co. IL. She was the sister of his first wife. He apparently died prior to 1900. She died 21 Jan. 1932 in LeRoy McLean Co. IL.
a. Minor Bishop was born 10 May 1876 in Empire Township McLean Co. IL. He married Tressie Mae Staley 10 Dec. 1902. They had at least three children:
i. Violet Bishop was born February 13, 1904, deceased at birth;
ii. Ruth Bishop was born April 26, 1905, deceased August 13, 1905
iii. Deane Maurice Bishop was born May 29, 1906 in McLean Co. IL. He died 27 Mar. 1976 in LeRoy McLean Co. IL. He married Clare Bailey on 8 Mar. 1941. She died 23 Feb. 1972. Deane had a son named Donald:
I. Donald Bishop was born 20 Apr. 1942. He died 30 Jan. 1969 in LeRoy McLean Co. IL.
b. Clinton Emory Bishop was born 12 Jan. 1878 in Randolph McLean Co. IL. He died in 1959. He married Lulu Mae Dunkin circa 1898. She was born May 1881 in IL. When did she pass away?
i. Emily Lucile Bishop was born 15 Jun. 1899 in LeRoy McLean Co. IL.
ii. James Minor Bishop was born 16 Nov. 1900 in LeRoy McLean Co. IL. He died 16 Jan. 1989 in Bloomington McLean Co. IL. Did he ever marry or have any children?
iii. Harry Bishop was born 20 Mar. 1902 in LeRoy McLean Co. IL. When did he die? Did he ever marry or have any children?
c. James Quitman Bishop was born 22 Sep. 1879 in Empire Township McLean Co. IL. He died 6 Nov. 1935 in Bloomington McLean Co. IL. He married (1st) Lillis Swarts (Schwartz) May 1900 in LeRoy McLean Co. IL. She apparently divorced James circa 1906 and married Oliver L. Trotter circa 1907. She died 21 Nov. 1943 in Edgar Co. IL. James married (2nd) Hester S. ??? What was her maiden name? Hester was born circa 1887 in IL.
i. James Quitman Bishop III was born 24 May 1902 in LeRoy McLean Co. IL.
ii. Female Bishop was born 30 Jan. 1905 in LeRoy McLean Co. IL. She apparently died young.
iii. John Edgar Bishop was born circa 1907 in IL.
iv. Julia Bishop was born circa 1913 in IL.
v. Louise Bishop was born circa 1914 in IL.
vi. Francis Bishop was born 15 Oct. 1915 in LeRoy McLean Co. IL.
vii. Abbie Bishop was born circa 1917 in IL.
viii. Jack M. Bishop was born 6 May 1923 in IL. He died 21 Nov. 2001 in IL.
ix. Bobbie Bishop, born circa Mar. 1929 in IL.
d. Margaret Edith Bishop was born 6 Aug. 1883 in Empire Township McLean Co. IL. She married John L. Patterson prior to 1907. He was born in IL circa 1874. John and Margaret Patterson had at least two children:
i. Alice Patterson was born circa 1907 in IL.
ii. Margery Patterson was born circa 1909 in IL. She may have married Lyle M. Brown.
