Our community is having a dedication of markers on the tombstones of several people who were in Texas during the time of the Republic of Texas (1836-1846). The ceremony will be held at the South Belton Cemetery in Belton, Texas, on Saturday, 17 October 2009 beginning at 9 AM. There will be several other markers included in the ceremony...at least one for a veteran of the War of 1812.
Henry Bishop Elliott, grandson of Capt. Henry Bishop and Elizabeth (Henry?), will have a marker placed on his tombstone declaring him a Citizen of the Republic. His mother was Nancy Bishop, the daughter of Capt. Henry and Elizabeth.
Nancy Bishop married Robert Elliott. They had 4 sons, 3 of which came to Texas. Henry Bishop Elliott is the second of the sons to be declared a Citizen of the Republic. Another son who came to Texas came after it had joined the USA as a state. I have been unable to find the 4th boy.
If anyone is interested in coming to the dedication, let me know and I will furnish directions to the cemetery.
