I have recently undertaken a project concerning local abandoned cemeteries in Florence County, SC. Tonight I was able to get the Blackwell/Burch Cemetery deemed "historically significant" by the county historical commission. The following is a brief list of names included in a 1961 survey. I will be visiting the cemetery tomorrow to begin a current survey to see what's left. Samuel Blackwell of Georgetown District died February 14, 1823 age 49yrs 5mo 24days(son of Samuel Blackwell and Elizabeth Dozier)(brother of Rachel Blackwell Lane)(husband of Mary Ann Hamlin Blackwell who died Nov. 21, 1869 age 84yrs 1mo 12days) Known buried in cemetery: Samuel Blackwell d. 2-14-1823 Mary Ann Hamlin Blackwell d. 11-20-1869 dau. Elizabeth Blackwell Pettigrew d. 12-09-1861 age 60 married James A. Pettigrew (buried here?) Seven of their children died between 1823-1855 and are buried here (Isabella, James R.M., Samuel B., John A., Olivia, Thomas J., William A.) son Major Samuel Blackwell d. 1847 married first Caroline Matilda Hunter daughter of Isaac H. and Janet Gee Hunter and granddaughter of John Gee and grandaughter of Rev. war hero Andrew Hunter.
