Harold Brainard/Clinton-Westbrook, CT/20th C./Help Please

Hello,

I am researching HAROLD BRAINARD who designed and built an American class sailboat called the ZIP. According to information received from Mystic Seaport, Brainard's original design was a 17-foot wooden sloop in both keel and centerboard models; these were produced from 1935 to 1943 at the Brainard Boat Works or Boat Yard in Clinton, CT.

In a search of the LDS/IGI/US/CT database I did not find a Harold Brainard but did find a HARRY BRAINARD, of Westbrook, CT, b. 25 Jul 1898, d. 26 Dec 1986 (SSDI has him in Colchester, CT at time of death). These dates make him about the right age to be designing and building boats during the time period 1935>1943.

If this "Harry Brainard" is the same person as the Harold Brainard in the text "The Sailboat Classes of North America" then his lineage goes back to Frederick Stephen Brainard> Robert Myers Brainard> Caleb Brainard (spouse: Sarah Crittenden)> Caleb Brainard (spouse: Susannah Clark)> Daniel Brainard> Jabez Brainard> Elijah Brainard> Daniel (emmigrant) Brainard/Brainerd. BUT I am not at all certain about this information! Place names are Westbrook, Branford, Higganum and Haddam in Connecticut. There is something about "Harold Brainard" designer/boatbuilder of Clinton on the Duck Island Yacht Club (Westbrook, CT)website.

Does this look familiar to anyone? Any help at all appreciated. Thank you! :-)

Lucijane

P.S. My father owned one of the original wooden ZIP boats. I learned to sail on that boat and would like to learn more about the designer/builder Harold Brainard.
