This is in regard to the John Brass that you think may have emigrated to America. My husband's ancestors include a John Brass, from County Kilkenny, that came to Illinois c. 1842. He is listed in the 1850 Census, Cook County, IL, Chicago, 5th ward: John Brafs, age 56, Peddler, b. Ireland; Children: Roger, age 23; Sarah, 18; Ellen 16; Bridget, (this is actually Mary Bridget) 10; Margaret 8; and John 7. His wife must have died before 1850 because she is not listed. However, a later marriage record from daughter, Margaret, lists her mother's name as Catherine.
This same family is listed in the 1860 census: Peoria County, IL, 5th ward Peoria City. John Brass is listed as 56 years old, merchant, born Ireland.
"Our" ancestry comes through Ellen Brass (above) who married a Joseph F. Devin. This latter family was in California in the 1870 census, and included a Bridget Brass, age 75, b. Ire.
From your information, many of your given names are very similar to ours. Do any of these dates conform to what you know about your Brass ancestors? Meredyth Devin
