I also have Breretons that were in Dublin around that time. I don't know too much about this family..I've hit many brick walls.
Here's what I do know:
Dennis Brereton was a teacher in Dublin. He was married to Bridget Mahar(Meagher). Some children were born in Ireland:
Mary 1847, John, Margaret, Julia 1853. According to family "lore", Dennis was "persecuted for teaching Gaelic" and emigrated to Austrailia. It was implied that he went voluntarily and there does not seem to be any records of him being a convict. I have found a record of a Brereton family arriving in Hobart 15 Jul 1861. "Mr. Brereton, Mrs. Brereton and four children". This fits with my family. Julia would have been the youngest at that time. There were two other children born to this family, Helen (Ellen) and Thomas. I don't know when or where they were born. Family notes say they were born in Austrailia and I have not found records of thier births in New Haven, CT where the family eventually settled. They seem to have only been in Austrailia for a short time. They were in New Haven by 1872.
Does any of this info connect with your Breretons
