Sandy,The following comes from a lady who has researched the Buffkins for more than 20 years:
"Benjamin & Josiah - Who was the father of these two men? I do not think they were father and son. Josiah who applied to register a cattle mark in 1806 (Horry Co. SC Deed Book 1-A p. 187) said he had used the mark upward to 20 years. Assuming he was 20 when he began to use it, would place birth ca. 1766, too young for a son but maybe a brother."
It seems she also thinks Benjamin & Josiah were brothers but hasn't found hard evidence to prove it. She goes on to state how Josiah disappeared from the 1810 SC Census and reappears in the 1820 Federal Census in Perry Co. Miss. along with Francis and Benjamin, the only three Buffkins in the entire state. Hope this helps.....Robin
