Callanan Family Genealogy Forum

In 1865 Michael Charles Callanan appeared apparently out of nowhere in Graaff-Reinet, South Africa. He reputedly came to the country with the British Army. He had friends who had served in the 43rd Regiment of Foot. In the local family it is said he came from Galway and had several brothers and one sister named Bridget. Reputedly he spoke with a heavy Irish brogue. To date, after several years of effort, we have had precisely zero success in tracing his origin, parents, date of birth or siblings. Any advice, wisdom or contact would be welcome.
