Lads In Peril
When River Ice
Fails to Hold

Thomas Cannon is nine years old. He started up Main street to buy some articles for the family Monday. He went the "river" route.

He fell in with the two Cope boys, Charles, 12, and Jack younger. The Cannon boy had an urge to cross the river on the ice. Charles cope did not think it safe. Thomas showed his courage by starting out on his icy trip, when bang ! through the ice he went.

Charles Cope ran to his assistance, but he also broke through. He was able however to hold to the cake of ice and not go under with the current.

In the meantime the Cannon boy went down, and by this time the lusty cries for help by the Cope boys, attracted the attention of the Simon Anderson crew of ice cutters who got to the spot in time to rescue both lads.

It was a perilous and foolish thing to do, but many have to get their scare before they can be made cautious. The Cannon lad still had his dollar bill in his hand when he was pulled out. It was most fortunate that help was at hand. It is a warning to all not to trust weakening ice when it begins to thaw.
