I am researching the Allan family. My gr gr grandmother was Barbara Allan, d. 1890, aged 79 in Kirkwall. Her only son, Robert Garden, was born in Rayne 17/8/1846. His father was John Garden who married Jean Lyon in 1850. John died by drowning in 1857. Have no record that Barbara & John were married. Robert (my gr grandfather) became the famous "merchant prince of Orkney" though at 10 had been a mere cattle boy in Aberdeen. Barbara's mother was Isabella (1851 census 77 yrs but 1841 listed as 65). Barbara's father was James Allan a crofter but have no information on him. Barbara's brother was Robert Allan who married Jean Allan (b. Cavish). Their children in 1851 census in Rayne, Aberdeenshire were Robert (8); George (7); Isabella (4); and William (2). Can not locate them on later census, so maybe family emigrated to Australia or U.S. Have no information on James Allan or Isabella (date of births or deaths). Can anyone help!??
