Brandy, Callie Ard Lewis was my great grandmother. Here is what I know:
She was born in 1856 in Henderson co., TX to Ashley Claiborn ARD and Mary Alice WILLIAMS. A.C. ARD was born in 1827 in AL and died about 1865 in the Civil War. Mary Alice WILLIAMS was born about 1835 in LA. They were married 3/5/1854 in Rusk, Cherokee Co., TX. "Granny Ard" was killed in a house fire near Mangum or Duke, OK about 1911 or 1913.
Mary Alice WILLIAMS parents were Patrick WILLIAMS and Eliza HOGAN (I think)from Washington Parish, LA. My cousin has more stories than I do and she says the family said that "Granny Ard" spoke English with a strong accent like French, and that she was crazy. I'd like to know more about that story!
Callie married John Calvin LEWIS 4/12/1878 in Henderson Co., TX. John's first wife was Rhoda McLANE or McLAIN. She died either in childbirth with Claudia or close after. My cousin says the family says that Claudia was rather darker skinned, so maybe Rhoda was part Indian. I know nothing about Claudia and would like to know more if you have info.
John and Callie had 10 children, one died shortly after birth. Their youngest, Ira Leslie LEWIS was my mother's father. John & Callie may have moved a lot between TX and OK. In 1898 they were in Garrett, TX when my grandfather was born. A little before 1907 John moved back to Mangum to apply for Indian reparations, saying his mother was Cherokee (Elizabeth Hurst) from FL. He was denied because he said the family stayed in FL and didn't go on the "Trail of Tears". They then moved to AL where he was born.
I don't know much about the ARD or WILLIAMS side and would love more info.
