“Gertrude Vander Woude was born June 6, 1911 to Abel and Rena (Vander Pol) Bakker on a farm northwest of Edgerton, Minnesota, Pipestone County. She was baptized and later made public profession of her faith in her Lord at the First Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton. As a young girl her family moved closer to Edgerton and she attended Edgerton Christian Elementary School. The family then farmed north of Edgerton and she attended country school there. After her schooling she helped on the family farm. At a mission fest in Edgerton, Gertrude met Paul Vander Woude and they were married on January 12, 1933 at her parents farm. They made their home on a farm northwest of Holland, MN and farmed with her husband’s father and brother. After moving to several farms they settled near Edgerton and farmed there for 22 years. In 1965 they moved to Chandler, MN where her husband and son, Frank, started the Chandler Machine Shop. Gertrude went to work for Huisken Meats in Chandler and also did some babysitting for families. After her husband’s retirement in 1990 they enjoyed traveling to the western states and visiting family in Michigan. Gertrude became a resident of Edgebrook Apartments in 1991 when her husband became a resident of Edgebrook Care Center. In July of 2001 she moved into Edgebrook Care Center. She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church of Chandler, enjoyed playing cards and crocheting, but she really loved spending time with her family. After a brief stay in Pipestone County Medical Center she entered Avera-McKennan Hospital last week where she died at the age of 93.
