George Thomas Belt, 90, of North Chelmsford, MA, passed away Sunday afternoon, September 4, 2011 surrounded by his family. He was happily married to Phyllis R. (Potter) Belt with whom he would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on September 9, 2011. George was born in Roseville, Arkansas on April 7, 1921, the son of the late George T. and Mary (Graves) Belt. He was educated in Arkansas Public Schools. Growing up in Ozark, Arkansas, George belonged to the CCC; prior to serving with the U.S. Army, 157th Infantry, 45th Division (Thunderbird) in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy during WWII. He was a Purple Heart recipient with 3 oak clusters and honorably discharged in 1945. While stationed at Ft. Devens in 1942, he met Phyllis, whom he married and became a lifelong Chelmsford resident. He worked for Bentley Wool Co. at the Southwell Mills, and metal fitting industry retiring in 1986. Wanting to remain busy, George started working for Alexander's Supermarket retiring for a second time from Hannaford Supermarkets in 2008. George was a member of the D.A.V. George was a square dance caller for 35 years, and loved square dancing with many clubs, and enjoyed playing the guitar and harmonica. He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church of North Chelmsford, MA. Besides his devoted wife, Phyllis, he is survived by his only son, Gary Belt of North Chelmsford; three grandchildren, Gary Lee Belt of North Chelmsford, Cheryl and her husband, Carl Jacobson of Weymouth, MA, and Jennifer and her husband, Jay Bousquet of Lowell; and many nieces and nephews in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and New Hampshire. Visiting hours Wed. 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral Thurs. at 8 AM from the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME, 106 MIDDLESEX ST., CHELMSFORD, with a funeral Mass at 9 AM at St. John's Church in North Chelmsford.
