They could be related. According to a source I have:
Daniel Champenois (b. before 1681) was listed among the Hugonot refugees from Niort between 1681-1686. After leaving Niort, it is assumed yhat he sought refuge in the Rhine Provinces in Germany, called the Palatine. This is based on the fact that Daniel is listed as an early Palatine emigrant to New York in the early 1700s. It is believed that he married before his emigration to NY. His wife's name was believed to be Johanna ??? according to birth records for a son named Paul, which was recorded in the West Camp Lutheran Churchbook.
It is believed that one of their children (Daniel) was born between 1700-1710 in the Palatinate of Germany.
