Hello Michael, There is some information on the families in Frankenthal in Henry Jones' book, Palatine Immigrants. Some researchers believe that these families are related to CHAMPENOIS. I am not so sure. A Daniel CHAMPENOIS came with the Palatines and settled at West Camp. If he is the same as the later Daniel CHAMPENOIS, of NYC and New Rochelle, then he probably went from La Rochelle to England, and just happened to join the Palatines in their trip here. The Daniel CHAMPENOIS of West Camp disappears, along with his wife and children. A Daniel CHAMPENOIS later appears in NYC, with a new wife, and a son, Thomas (my ancestor), b. 1725. The name certainly was corrupted. Daniel appears in the church books of Sleepy Hollow as SAMPENWA (a Dutch corruption). In my line, the name returned to CHAMPENOIS. It is also seen as CHAMPANOIS, and today also survives as CHAMPNOIS, and CHAMPNOY. It means "someone from the Champagne region of France" or "someone who spoke the Champenois dialect" (of Old French). There were probably a number of unrelated families, in different parts of France. It appears today on sparking French wines, not made in Champagne, as "made by the Champenois process". Feel free to contact me privately, by E-Mail, if you would like to "talk" further. Bob
