You have only part of the story. Yes, the Indiana Adjutant-General reported his enlistment and discharge from the 49th Infantry. It also lists a William M. Todd of Crawford County enlisting as a private in Leavenworth on 8-13-63. The unit was the Independent Scouts Indiana Cavalry Company. They stayed in Indiana to capture deserters and to keep the peace. The unit disbanded on 4-23-1864. I suspect this is the same man. |
