Can anyone comment on the individuals in this will? Will of SUSANNAH (maiden name unknown) BRUTON probated 1838 Spartanburg SC: I, SUSANNAH BRUTON, of the state and district aforesaid, being of sound and disposing mind and understanding, do make my last will and testament in manner and form following. Viz: I give and devise unto my great-granddaughter SUSANNAH E.B. COCKRAN of the State and district aforesaid, the tract of landwhereon I now live, containing seventy acres more or less. And also, all my personal Estate of whatever kind in trust for the following uses and purposes toViz: For the sole and separate use of her mother CELIA COCKRAN during her natural life free from and without the control of her husband JACOB COCHRAN and after the death of said COCHRAN for the use and benefit of the said SUSANNAH E. B.COCHRAN her heirs and assigns forever. I nominate constitute and appointmy said great-granddaughter SUSANNAH E. B. COCHRAN executrix of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all wills heretofore made by me, ratifying and confirming this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty third day of April 1835. Signed sealed and acknowledged, SUSANNAH X BRUTON her mark By the Testatrix in our presence and by me Subscribed in her presence CP Woodruff and A P Woodruff Source: Will Book (WPA Copies) Spartanburg District, SC Volume 2, Section C, p. 114. SUSANNAH BRUTON was listed in the 1830 Spartanburg SC census head of household, several children both boys & girls under 15, one middle aged woman, and one woman 70-80 (probably Susannah). She inherited land from her husband DAVID BRUTON who died 1816 in Spartanburg. Apparently she was quite a bit younger than he was, and may have been a second wife. CECELIA COCKRAM (COCHRAN) is listed in the 1840 Spartanburg SC census, single middle aged woman with children. Her husband JACOB COCHRAN/COCKRAM/COCKERHAM is possibly listed as a single man 40-50 in Laurens Co SC. Any help greatly appreciated. |
