WHITWORTH, NIX, BOYD, SMITH, and COCKERHAM: Early Families in Monroe County, Mississippi
A small set of family papers has been recovered from Hamilton, Monroe County, Mississippi. Most of the papers relate to the WHITWORTH family. The papers date from 1835 to 1910.
JOHN WHITWORTH was in Monroe County as early as 1820 (the county was opened for settlers in 1816). JOHN and THOMAS WHITWORTH are shown on the 1830 Monroe County census; and by 1840 ELI, FENDALL, JOHN H. and THOMAS WHITWORTH are listed.
The estate papers include an assortment of receipts, deeds, promissory notes, Powers of Attorney, and letters. The earliest deed is from 1835 transferring ownership of land in Monroe County, Mississippi, to THOMAS WHITWORTH; another deed dates to 1837.
Although the bulk of the papers relate to the WHITWORTH family, a few of them are documents from the SMITH family, the COCKERHAM family, and the BOYD and NIX families of Monroe County, Mississippi.
The following articles have been written and posted at Hill Country of Monroe County, Mississippi, about these family documents:
