I, also am a descendant of this Gonter/Gonder/Conder/Konder family. My ancestors settled in Mint Hill which is now in Mecklenburg Co., NC and established the Morning Star Lutheran Church there. The family line as I have it is George Konder, b. 1618 in Trier, Rhineland, Germany, d. Jun 1669 in Trier; his son, Bartholomues, b. 1642, also in Trier, d. 24 Oct 1715 (location unknown), married Elizabeth N.; their son, George Peter Konder, b. 13 Dec 1678 in Trier, d. 24 Oct 1718, in Trier, married ?; their son, Hans George Mathias Conder, b. 1706 in Trier, d. Bet. 1779 - 1780 in Rowan Co., NC, married Elizabeth Abbey Atkins, and had Mark Gonter/Conder. Another son, Lewis/Louis/Loderwick Conder is the founder and patriarch of the NC Conders. He was b. 1755 in Crooked Creek, NC, in Mecklenburg Co., NC and d. in 1820. He married Elizabeth Mueller (no other info) and they had 10 children, one of whom was Phillip, who is my great, great grandfather. Phillip married Sophie Byrum, and they had 11 children, one of whom, Clarinda Conder is my great grandmother. She married James Russell Cuthbertson. The surname Conder and its variations comes from where the early antecedents lived in Germany: the village of Kond. When they moved to a larger town, they were known as the "Konders" meaning the people from Kond. Hence the name. I am sure that Gonder is just another variation on the surname and should be considered when doing research on the family. Anne
