A reunion is planned for Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Asbury School, in Marshall County, Alabama. The reunion is being jointly sponsored by the Shoal Creek Cemetery Association and the Old Bethel Cemetery Association.
The Dowdys settled in Dekalb County, Alabama about 1853. Shoal Creek Cemetery is the burial place of Rev. Jacob K. Dowdy, who was born in 1822 in Georgia, and died in 1880 in Dekalb County, Alabama. Also buried in the cemetery is his sister-in-law Minerva (Findley) Dowdy, who was born in 1818 in South Carolina, and died in 1892 in Dekalb County, Alabama. The reunion will include a tour of the two cemeteries. It is hoped to hold the reunion every other year, on the second Saturday of June in the even-numbered years.
There are now web sites to introduce the history of these two cemeteries, and to raise funds for their preservation. The address for the Shoal Creek Cemetery Association is www.shoalcreekcemetery.org.
Further details of the reunion are to be distributed in the spring of 2004. If you wish to be on the mailing list for the reunion, please send your e-mail address or street address to the webmaster: Rev. Sherman Isbell, 3155 Lindenwood Lane, Fairfax, VA 22031, or RSIsbell@aol.com.
