[Clipping found in the pocket of an old Vermont diary. There is much more description of the place and Mr. Downer's gentility. Email me with your address if you would like a complete photocopy.] Vermont Journal August 28, 1900 With the death August 28, of ROSWELL DOWNER, landlord of Downer's Hotel, a figure which has long been familiar to the people of this vicinity, passes from sight. For more than half a century he had kept the old road-house established by his father SAMUEL DOWNER in 1830. and there had done the honors for three and even four generations of guests. It was a frequent remark of his in greeting a visitor to say, "I remember when your grandfather used to drive out here for dinner." Another smaller clipping says: In Weathersfield, Aug. 28, Roswell Downer, aged 76 years. |
