The name FENN comes from a marsh in England where they lived. Until about 1100 a.d. people did not have a surname. They had a problem with so many Johns, Jesses, Williams etc. they started calling them John who lives in the Fenn marsh, John who lives among the Birch (BIRCH/BURCH) trees. Or John who is a carpenter (John Carpenter) etc.
Many of the Fenns in the US were originally Fan or Fann. They were makers of fans in England. Some changed the spelling along the way.
