Jacob Still Fipps
Born: abt. 1817 in Belmont Co. (September 22nd from one source) Ohio, near Smithfield.
Died: 1897 in Dover, OK. Buried in Dover Cemetery with wife Mahaley (Miller) Fipps
Some facts:
Jacob’s parents were John Crosby Phipps and Nancy Still. Their marriage record is on file in the Jefferson County Courthouse in Stubenville, OH. It is dated 16 Dec 1813 under the names John Fips m. Nancy Still. The listing in the index is under John Fipps. Jacob married Anna Elizabeth Bush in 1839. They had their first child, Nancy Jane, in 1842 (b. 8/11/1842 in Indiana, I believe Nancy is named after Jacob’s Mother). Their other children include: Rebecca Cusiar (b. 9/1/1844), Robert Richard (b. 9/3/1846), John Quincy (b. 3/12/1848), Deliah Ann (b. 8/26/1849), Jacob H. (b. 2/26/1851), David L. (b. 6/28/1853), William Benjamin (b. 6/13/1855), Fredrick Fillmore (b. 12/23/1858 in Missouri), and Sarah Louisa (b. 7/15/1/1860), Jacob can be found in census records starting in 1840 in Elyria, Lorain Co., OH as head of household with Anna as his wife. He is found in Jackson Co., Salt Creek Twp, OH for the 1850 census with Anna (Nancy is b. in Indiana in 1842,so they must have moved before the census). Jacob is in Dent Co., Watkins Twp, MO for census of 1860 (The family moved there around 1857). Jacob enlisted in the Union Army at Benton Barracks on Oct. 18 1862 for a 3-year or duration of the war term. He was mustered into the 32nd infantry Company D Missouri Volunteers. Jacob gave the following information to Lt. Collins at the time of his muster: Rank: Musician, Age: 44, Height: 5’5”, Hair: Brown, Eyes: Hazel, Complexion: Fair, Occupation: Carpenter, Nativity: Belmont Co. OH, Place of residence: Dent Co. MO. His Company commander was Captain Charles C. Bland. The Brigade commander was Brigadier General Francis P. Blair. The division commander was Brigadier General Fredrick Steele. The Corp commander was General William T. Sherman. The Army of the Mississippi was commanded by General John A. McClernand (information from record group M390, Cabinet 44,drawer 4, roll #14, National Archives and the Arkansas Post National Memorial). The 32nd MO was shipped down the Mississippi and was engaged at Chickasaw Bayou and the battle of Arkansas Post. At the battle of Arkansas Post, Jacob was injured while bearing wounded from the field. He would spend the rest of the war in a hospital in St. Joseph, MO and was transferred to the Invalid’s Corp. He is listed in the censuses of 1870, 1880, and 1890 in Dent Co. Jacob lists his occupation as carpenter or farmer on most of the censuses and lists Maryland as the state of birth of his parents. Jacob’s mother, his wife Anna, his daughter Nancy Jane, and his son Robert are buried in the Fipps Family Gravesite located on the original farm 2.5 miles east of Anutt, MO on Hwy C south side of roadway. Jacob married Cynthia Mahurin on March 2nd 1867. They filed a civil action for divorce on February 18th, 1868. Jacob married Mahaley Miller on April 8th, 1869. They had three children, James Albert (b. 6/22/1871), Margaret (b. 2/25/1873), and Charles Thomas (b. 5/21/1878). James convinced Jacob to make the Land Run to Oklahoma in 1891 at the age of 74. James knew the land from his cowboy days along the Chisum Trail. Their original homestead was along Turkey Creek near Dover, OK. The land deed records are on file at the Kingfisher Co. Courthouse in Kingfisher, OK. The homestead cabin was destroyed by the tornadoes of 1999.
