George Furtney is my 4th great grandfather, born 1818 in Virginia, and most likely died btwn. 1860/70 in Harper's Ferry, (West) Virginia. He married his wife, Mary Elizabeth Dowden, in 1843 in Washington, DC. I descend from their son John Henry, b. 1844 in Maryland or Washington, DC. Some notes compiled by a distant Furtney cousin on George read as follows: "John married Polly Langley of Leesburg, Va. George H. Furtney, the only child, whose parents died while he was small and his mother's sister Harriet Duvall of Leesburg raised him from a child;~ and he lived with her until he married. His wife was Mary Elizabeth Dowden of Montgomery County, Md." This is similar to what is recorded in the Fortney family book, pages 127 and 170, except for the fact that the Fortney book mentions the other two siblings and puts George's death place in Iowa. I would be interested in what you have on the family. Lee Michael |
