THOMASVILLE TIMES ENTERPRISE Thursday August 14, 2003 Brooks county man dies in fire By Jennifer Terry jennifer@gaflnews.com PAVO --- A Brooks County man was killed in a Wednesday morning house fire at the Colquitt County line. Ronald Miller, Brooks County Coroner, said Charles Gay, 62, was inside the mobile home at 14227 Tallokas Road when the fire started. The Moultrie Observer's Gene Pate was delivering newspapers at about 4:30 a. m. when he spotted the fire. The sky was lit up, and I said, "Something's wrong," Pate said. As he called 911, other people arrived on the scene. Pate said he thought he heard screams coming from inside the home but the fire was too hot for the witnesses to get close to the house. Volunteer fire units from Colquitt, Brooks and Thomas counties responding to the fire found the house engulfed in flames. "All we could do was put it out," said Billy Glass, chief of Autreyville Volunteer Fire Department. "A portion of one wall was still standing."
